NISHITANI'S PROBLEM

(1) Science reveals the humanly inhospitable nature of the universe.

(The universe is "a field of death.")

_________

Therefore:

(2) Traditional religious teleology (purpose, meaning, value) is no longer tenable.

(The view is false.)

_________

But:

(3) We cannot live without purpose, values, etc.

The tension between (2) and (3) Nishitani sees as an existential problem (called "nihility") with a religious solution.

NISHITANI'S ZEN SOLUTION

A. The tension between (2) and (3) (or between (1) and (3)) as appropriated "existentially" is a spur to meditation.

B. Our meditation can find (will find?) through nihilism about ourselves (through nihility) a "bottomlessness" where the tension is resolved in "Emptiness" or the "field of emptiness."
